VISCERAL MANIPULATION
"Life and motion are intertwined. We cannot have life without motion."
~ J.P. Barral |
Viscera refers to the organs and internal structures of the body.
Fascia is the interconnected web of dense tissue that surrounds, infuses with, and affects every structure and cell.
Visceral Manipulation is a "hands on" osteopathic technique of releasing restrictions around the fascial connections between organs, vessels, nerves and other related structures.
Pathology of internal organs can result in visceral restriction. Surgical procedures cause similar adhesions as do traumatic incidents such as falls, motor vehicle accidents and sports related injuries.
The pain associated with visceral disruption is often delayed for months or even years after an injury. By then, the resulting internal restrictions, adhesions and scar tissue have begun to affect the natural movement of various organs and body parts.
Jean-Pierre Barral, originally a physiotherapist, is now a renowned osteopathic physician in France. His discovery of visceral manipulation as a subtle, structure-specific, fascial mobilization technique led Time Magazine to recognize him as one of the "New Breed of Healers" to watch in the 21st century.
Visceral manipulation is an effective and safe therapeutic tool and is cited as a missing link in recurring musculoskeletal pain, postural malalignment and biomechanical dysfunction. Barral believes a startling 90% of musculoskeletal problems have a visceral origin.
In an article entitled "Has Your Liver Been Liberated?" Barral notes successfully treating chronic back pain, joint pain, indigestion, infection, incontinence, migraines, even impotence and sterility.
The objective of visceral manipulation, he says, is to "wake up the tissue, release restrictions, and allow the body's internal mechanisms to continue in harmony."
The application of these techniques by trained practitioners permits the body's natural healing mechanisms to return functional movement.
Visceral restrictions rarely reveal themselves with traditional diagnostic tools such as MRIs, CT-scans and X-rays. Thus, the chronic pain of visceral dysfunction continues to perplex the health care system, drain resources and, most importantly, cause unnecessary physical distress and hardship.
Digestive dysfunction, for example, often results in pain, discomfort, and immobility in areas of the body seemingly disconnected from the actual source of the problem.
Visceral manipulation is a safe and effective therapeutic tool in treating biomechanical dysfunction, recurring musculoskeletal pain, and postural misalignment.
