IYENGAR YOGA

~ B.K.S. Iyengar

We live in a world of constant change, unyielding stimulus and turmoil. Our physical well-being is a reflection of this environment and often neglected as we push the envelope towards material rewards and financial success.

Iyengar Yoga is a system of very specific, sequential movements purposefully designed to strengthen the body, improve breathing, restore energy, and relax the mind.

It was originally developed by B.K.S. Iyengar who, at 93 years of age, is still considered one of the world's leading authorities in yoga practice and philosophy.

Iyengar yoga is a series of physical poses (asanas) and exercises that promote muscular fitness, flexibility, and balance. It encourages better breathing, helps fights fatigue, improves posture, and ultimately instills a new sense of self-confidence.

Three Steps to Success

Instruction centers on three essentials that form the foundation of Iyengar yoga:

1. Various props are used to assist students in experiencing the effects of correct positioning.

2. Proper anatomical alignment is the heart and soul of physical harmony and balance.

3. Thoughtful timing and sequencing are used to engage the mind, creating vivid mental impressions of proper alignment and posture.

As an established physiotherapist and more recently a certified yoga instructor, Corinne Skrobot is both a devoted practitioner and an enthusiastic proponent of Iyengar yoga. This therapeutic science, she says, rejuvenates the body, stills the mind and elevates the spirit.

Making a Difference

"Corinne's explanations and emphasis on proper posture were particularly beneficial to me. Improvement to my shoulder discomfort and the disappearance of extreme (morning) nausea I attribute to the Yoga classes Corinne instructs. I always left feeling better and continue to see improvement." ~ Cheryl McBride, North Vancouver, B.C.
